HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The ongoing federal government shutdown is causing disruptions for many families, especially those relying on federal paychecks and nutrition assistance like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In response, ABC13 is highlighting its annual Share Your Holidays food drive, which directly benefits the Houston Food Bank.
Even before the drive officially kicks off, the Houston Food Bank is already working to support families in need. They report that as of late October, over 50,000 federal employees in their area have missed a full paycheck. Each day the shutdown continues, about 15,000 households feel the impact.

The Share Your Holidays food drive has a rich history. It started from a single-hour event on TV and has grown significantly over the last 45 years. Since its inception in 1980, countless cans of food have been collected, supporting many families during tough times.
Food Insecurity in Texas
Food insecurity affects nearly one million people in southeast Texas. According to the Houston Food Bank, one in five residents struggles to secure enough food.
A recent report shows that the situation is particularly severe in northern Harris County, where over half the residents report moderate to high food insecurity. In Houston and Harris County, food insecurity rates are significantly above the national average of 14%, hitting hardest among Black and Hispanic communities.
Texas as a whole faces serious challenges, with 5.3 million residents experiencing food insecurity, the highest in the nation. Rural areas are especially vulnerable, grappling with limited resources and transportation issues.
In light of these challenges, the ongoing Share Your Holidays. Donations will be accepted through New Year’s Eve, aiming to exceed past milestones and bring relief to those in need right in our own backyard.
