The third annual Maritime Innovation Week gathered over 300 leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss sustainable changes in the maritime industry.
The event took place at two locations: London’s BT Tower and the Port of Tyne’s 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub. Attendees exchanged ideas on how collaboration and new technologies can reshape the sector.
This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate and Amplify: Making Innovation Happen’, highlighted the urgent need to tackle challenges like decarbonisation and clean energy. Supported by major organisations like BT and the Department for Transport, the event featured panels and workshops aimed at promoting progress across the industry.
Mike Kane MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security, kicked off the event with a keynote address. He shared details about the Government’s £200 million investment in clean maritime technology, which focuses on renewable fuels and autonomous vessels. Discussions throughout the week underscored the importance of adopting new technologies for a sustainable maritime future.
Another significant moment was Julia Prescot CBE’s announcement about the return of Venture Connect in 2025. This program links small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the North East with investors to drive innovation in battery tech, green logistics, and climate resilience.
On the second day, the spotlight turned to the North East, examining regional advancements in decarbonisation and digital transformation under the theme “Innovation for People and Placemaking.”
Dr. Jo North, Innovation Ecosystem Director at the Port of Tyne, emphasized the importance of turning ideas into real solutions. She stated, “Collaboration and creativity are key as we address the challenges of decarbonisation and innovation in maritime.”
Last December, the Port of Tyne launched the Green North Sea Shipping Corridor Project, establishing a connection between the UK and Amsterdam.
