Success at Liberty University goes beyond athletics. Recently, the Flames Club celebrated a record-breaking giving day. During this year’s Annual Giving Day, they raised an impressive $3.3 million with the help of 2,214 donations. Last year, the total was $1.7 million. This growth shows a strong commitment from the community.
A key highlight of the event was the introduction of the Tom and Christine Dewberry Athletics Mission Fund. This initiative aims to support student-athletes in sharing their faith and serving others through regional and international missions. The Dewberrys’ generous contribution is set to give Liberty’s NCAA Division I student-athletes unique chances to make a positive impact in the world.
Liberty Athletics wants every student-athlete to go on at least one mission trip while at the university, tying into its mission of integrating faith into the student experience.
Aside from the mission fund, various teams took advantage of the giving day to raise funds for their programs. The top five fundraising programs were:
1. Softball: $68,140
2. Women’s Lacrosse: $64,600
3. Women’s Soccer: $57,807
4. Football: $52,578
5. Cross Country/Track & Field: $29,483
Many of these teams have already seen success this season. The women’s cross country team clinched its second consecutive Conference USA title, with sophomore Allie Zealand winning the individual championship. Meanwhile, the women’s soccer team shares the Conference USA regular season title and enters the CUSA Championship as the top seed.
Overall, Liberty’s Giving Day on October 22 saw a staggering $7,458,965 raised from 7,113 gifts, surpassing last year’s total by nearly $1.8 million. This reflects the community’s strong spirit and dedication to its mission of “Training Champions for Christ.”
In today’s world, charitable contributions like those from Liberty’s community are vital. According to a 2022 survey by Giving USA, charitable giving in the U.S. reached $484.85 billion. Such generosity is crucial for organizations to thrive and support community needs. At Liberty, this giving spirit fuels both athletic excellence and meaningful outreach.
