Mamdani’s Victory in New York Sparks Concerns About Changing US Perspectives on Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — Zohran Mamdani’s recent election as New York City’s mayor has stirred a mix of anxiety and controversy in Israel. His pro-Palestinian views are a departure from the typical support for Israel often seen in U.S. politics.

Many Israelis are worried that Mamdani’s leadership might cool relations with the U.S., Israel’s key ally. Interestingly, about one-third of Jewish voters supported him, which some see as a sign of changing attitudes.

On the flip side, Palestinians in the West Bank celebrated Mamdani’s win, calling it a sign of a broader awakening among young Americans. Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian politician, stated, “This election reflects a rising voice against injustice, including the Palestinian cause.”
