Federal and state health officials are looking into 13 cases of infant botulism. These are connected to baby formula that is being recalled. The company involved, ByHeart Inc., has agreed to recall two specific lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, according to the FDA.
All the affected infants were hospitalized after consuming formula from two lots: 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2. The cases were reported in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. Thankfully, no deaths have been linked to these cases.
The FDA is investigating how the formula became contaminated and if it impacted other products. This formula makes up about 1% of national sales, as per the CDC.
If you have this formula at home, check the lot number before disposing of it. The CDC advises cleaning any items or surfaces that came in contact with the formula using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher. If your baby shows signs of illness after consuming the recalled formula—like poor feeding, lack of head control, trouble swallowing, or reduced facial expressions—seek medical help immediately.
