Over 100 volunteers gathered at Temple Emanu-El recently for Mitzvah Day, a tradition where the community comes together to support those in need. This year, their mission was even more crucial due to rising food insecurity linked to delays in SNAP benefits caused by recent government actions.
Each year, volunteers create care packages filled with food, hygiene items, school supplies, and more. They distribute around 2,500 kits across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Rabbi Amy Ehrlich shared, “It’s a time when the entire congregation comes together to make a difference. We partner with organizations that understand the needs of our community.”
With the ongoing SNAP distribution crisis, the urgency of their efforts has intensified. “We’re also running an emergency food drive to respond to the increased need,” Rabbi Ehrlich added. Susan Kaufman, a long-time volunteer, emphasized the importance of their work. “We’ve collected over 40,000 units of food for SNAP recipients. It may not change their lives, but it can make things a little easier for a day or two.”
Recent statistics show that food insecurity has surged; a report from the USDA indicates a 15% increase in households struggling to get enough food. This is compounded by recent moves from the Trump administration directing states to halt SNAP benefits. According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, any benefits sent for November were unauthorized, leaving many families without crucial support.
