ORLANDO, Fla. – Firefly Aerospace is set to launch its Blue Ghost Mission 1 early Wednesday morning. This mission will send 10 NASA investigations to the Moon.
The Blue Ghost lander is built to transport equipment and scientific tools to the lunar surface. It’s shaped like a box and has four sturdy legs for landing. The lander can carry up to 155 kg and features two decks for its payload. It powers itself with solar panels, which can be positioned differently based on sunlight.
This mission is a part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and aims to support the Artemis program. The instruments on board are designed to deepen our understanding of the Moon and planetary systems. They will also help prepare for future crewed missions.
Dr. Nicola Fox, from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, emphasized the importance of this mission in learning from the past and ensuring the safety of astronauts. The technology demonstrations on the Blue Ghost will play a key role in these goals.
On January 15, the Blue Ghost will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After a 45-day journey, it is set to land near Mons Latreille, located in Mare Crisium, a large basin on the Moon.
