A Local Initiative Fights Food Insecurity
In Colorado Springs, a mother named K Harris is turning worry into action. With concerns about possible cuts to federal food assistance programs, she decided to help her neighborhood. K created a community food pantry called “The Neighbors Pantry” in her front yard.
When she saw news about these potential cuts, K didn’t wait. She quickly set up a pantry inspired by the idea of “Little Free Libraries” but focused on food. This way, people can access what they need right in their neighborhood.
K understands food insecurity. Her family once relied on SNAP benefits during tough times. She recalls, “We had just $40 left in the bank for the week.” This experience deeply influenced her decision to establish the pantry.
Her husband built the pantry using materials they had at home. Within a week, it was ready. It includes essential items like canned goods, baby formula, pet food, and hygienic products—things often not covered by SNAP.
K is intentional about stocking items that people need most. “Those things can be expensive, and there’s often no other assistance for them,” she explains.
Since its opening, the pantry has garnered attention on social media platforms like TikTok, bringing visitors from different areas. One user, Careli, discovered it after losing his job. He had been searching for food but found local food banks mostly empty. After driving 30 minutes, he was relieved to see a variety of food available at K’s pantry.
K aims to help anyone in need. “If you have a need and there’s no other way to fill it, we will give you what we have,” she states.
This grassroots effort highlights a growing trend where communities take charge of their own food security. The increasing recognition of food deserts and the lack of access to nutritious food has spurred similar initiatives nationwide. According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, over 35 million people in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2021, showcasing the ongoing need for solutions on the community level.
K Harris’s story reminds us: immediate action can spark hope, and small changes can make a big difference.
