Mack recalled feeling aimless at the age of 25 while living in New York City with Kreuk. They both sought more from life and believed a self-help course could provide answers. Kreuk was enthusiastic about the program, calling it “the science of joy” and emphasized how it made her life better.
Following Kreuk’s encouragement, Mack attended a course in Vancouver led by Nancy Salzman, another key figure in NXIVM. In April 2018, Mack was arrested after a federal raid on NXIVM’s Albany headquarters. She later pled guilty for her role in recruiting women into the cult, where many faced severe abuse. Mack served two years of a three-year sentence. Meanwhile, NXIVM’s leader, Keith Raniere, is serving 120 years for his crimes.
The scandal surrounding NXIVM has drawn significant public attention, partly due to HBO’s The Vow, which explored the cult’s inner workings. This case is relevant today as it highlights how self-improvement programs can sometimes hide harmful agendas.
Experts warning against such organizations emphasize the importance of research before joining any self-help group. A 2022 study indicated that nearly one in six adults has participated in an unregulated coaching program, showcasing the demand and potential risks involved.
