Ebisu has opened its doors on Hillsborough Street, and the buzz is real. Long lines during its first weekend showed just how eager Raleigh residents and NC State students were to check it out. After months of anticipation, this store is bringing a slice of Japanese culture, products, and design to the Triangle area.
One standout feature of Ebisu is its unique selection. It’s the only one in North Carolina and among a small number in the U.S. This rarity has drawn in curious shoppers. Jonothan Felix, a backstore manager, noted that the store’s atmosphere and unique items are what make it special. He recalls feeling a rush of excitement seeing the lines on opening day: “I just knew it would be a hit,” he said.
Ebisu began in Japan in 2016 and made its way to the U.S. in 2019. Its goal? To share Japanese lifestyle goods—from snacks to collectibles—with customers around the world. While most products are Japanese, some also hail from other Asian countries. One particular item, the popular Labubus, created a buzz with promotions and giveaways.
Before this new location, the nearest Ebisu was in Philadelphia, with a few others on the East Coast. Felix believes Raleigh’s growth and its diverse culture made it an ideal spot for Ebisu’s expansion. “The city is growing, and it’s a melting pot,” he said, pointing out the nearby Asian-themed businesses like Momo House, a popular boba tea spot.
Inside, the store is both colorful and compact. The downstairs area is filled with everyday items—think candies, chips, and drinks. Items change often to keep the selection fresh. As customers explore, they might find themselves drawn to unique Japanese soft drinks like Calpico, as Derrick Findley, an engineering student, did on his visit. “I love this stuff,” he said, expressing his enthusiasm for the Japanese goods.
But Ebisu isn’t just about food and drinks. It offers a variety of home goods, stationery, and beauty products. Julia Linville, a warehouse manager, mentioned the extensive beauty section and an array of household items, proving there’s something for everyone.
The upstairs is dedicated to collectibles and toys, showcasing a mix of anime figures and model kits. It has become a hotspot for enthusiasts looking for something special.
So far, customer reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Shoppers have taken to social media to share their experiences, praising the vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings. According to Google reviews, shoppers praise the store’s variety and atmosphere. Felix hopes this initial success sparks a greater interest in Japanese culture, leading to more Ebisu locations across the country: “I see more of these stores popping up in cities that are growing.”
