Ohio State Dominates Playoff Rankings as Miami Soars in Exciting Upset!

This week, Ohio State held its spot at the top of the college football rankings, sparking discussions about whether Indiana should stay at No. 2, ahead of Texas A&M. While the top three teams remained the same, an earlier game in August impacted the rankings significantly.

The College Football Playoff committee moved Miami up to No. 15, placing them just above Georgia Tech. This decision was largely influenced by Miami’s impressive opening win against Notre Dame, rather than their recent victory over Syracuse.

Mack Rhoades, the committee chair, noted, “The win against Notre Dame was key. The ACC lacks strong nonconference wins aside from that.” Following Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia completed the top five, maintaining the same positions as last week.

Texas Tech climbed to No. 6 after a solid win against BYU, while Mississippi dropped to No. 7 despite a win over Citadel. Oregon, Notre Dame, and Texas rounded out the top ten.

Oklahoma and BYU, at Nos. 11 and 12 respectively, likely miss out on the playoff bracket since Miami claims the ACC spot, and the top Group of 5 team is ranked No. 24 South Florida. Rhoades stated, “South Florida has been consistent among Group of 5 teams.”

The final playoff bracket will be revealed on December 7, with the playoff starting December 19 and culminating in the championship game a month later.

Among the questions on the committee’s mind were the positions of Indiana and Texas A&M. Rhoades mentioned that their discussions were quite lengthy. Indiana secured a win at Penn State through last-minute plays, while Texas A&M earned a decisive road victory at Missouri.

For conferences to watch: In the ACC, No. 22 Pitt could be a dark horse if they win at least two of their coming games against tough opponents. In the Big Ten, teams like Michigan and USC, ranked 18th and 17th respectively, need crucial wins to stay in the playoff hunt. The Big 12 features Texas Tech and BYU contending for limited playoff spots, while the SEC showcases powerhouse teams aiming for a strong postseason.

Group of 5 teams, like South Florida, strive to grab that valuable conference-champion slot. Their early victories over strong teams like Boise State have made them a formidable competitor.

Looking ahead, here are some exciting potential first-round matchups:

  • No. 12 South Florida at No. 5 Georgia: A challenging game for any team at the legendary venue.
  • No. 11 Miami at No. 6 Texas Tech: The last meeting ended with Miami’s 45-10 victory.
  • No. 10 Texas at No. 7 Ole Miss: A fresh matchup since Texas joined the SEC.
  • No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Oregon: An intriguing rematch to settle past ties.

This season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in years, with close calls and surprising upsets influencing the playoff picture. Fans and analysts alike are on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next round of matchups.
