Kutztown, PA – On a windy Tuesday evening in eastern Pennsylvania, the Kutztown University women’s soccer team put on an impressive show, defeating the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks 5-1 in the PSAC Women’s Soccer Championships. This victory marks a big step for the Golden Bears, who finished the regular season with a strong record of 12-4-1.
Leading the charge were standout players Corinne Morgan and Maura Day, both recently named to the All-PSAC First Team. The Golden Bears took control early, scoring a goal in the first two minutes from a corner kick. Soon after, they capitalized on a defensive slip from IUP, making it 2-0 quickly.
Kutztown dominated in the first half, doubling IUP in shots and corner kicks. Although Indiana scored just before halftime, Morgan exploded in the second half with a hat trick, sealing the game for Kutztown. Day, recognized as the East Division’s Defensive Player of the Year, played a crucial role, adding two assists to her tally, bringing her season total to nine.
Kutztown ended the match by leading in several areas: shots (12-5), shots on goal (10-5), and corners (7-2). Goalkeeper Morgan O’Donnell secured her 12th win of the season, tying for eighth place in the program’s history.
This win was especially notable as it was the first time since 2010 that Kutztown scored five goals in a postseason game. In fact, their offensive performance has surprised many, as they are typically known for their strong defense.
The success didn’t stop with Kutztown; other teams from the East Division also secured wins, showcasing their strength in the PSAC Championship. The Golden Bears will now head to West Chester, where they will compete against Millersville on November 14.
Kutztown’s recent run underscores the growth of women’s soccer in the PSAC, where teams have shown greater competitiveness. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, participation in women’s sports has increased by over 40% in the last decade, contributing to a rise in the quality of play across the board.
