University of North Alabama Soccer Team Shines in Academics
The University of North Alabama’s soccer team recently received recognition for their academic achievements. Four players were named Academic All-ASUN: Alice Bussey, Molly Parham, Adelyn Speight, and Madison Vukas. This year’s four selections are the highest in UNA’s Division I era, surpassing last year’s three honorees.
Alice Bussey is a standout. As a graduate student in business administration with a perfect 4.0 GPA, she led the team with five goals this season. Her performance on the field earned her the ASUN Player of the Week award after a stellar game that saw her score twice and assist once.
Madison Vukas, also a graduate student with a 4.0 in sports management, broke records for the fewest goals allowed in a season and had an impressive 111 saves. She received the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week title for her exceptional play during two consecutive shutouts.
Adelyn Speight, a finance major and first-time captain, played a crucial role in a defense that recorded nine shutouts, limiting opponents to less than one goal per game. This defensive effort was important for the team’s overall success.
Molly Parham, another captain and exercise science major, was vital in disrupting opposing attacks. Her midfield presence helped the team maintain one of the toughest defenses in the ASUN.
Together, these players contributed to UNA’s strong 2025 season, ending with a record of 8-5-6 and a return to the ASUN postseason. They achieved the best defensive record in the conference, allowing the fewest goals and having the highest save percentage in the nation at 90.2%.
Chris Walker, the head coach, expressed pride in their accomplishments, highlighting their dedication both in the classroom and on the field. As the team moves forward, these athletes set a powerful example of balancing academics and athletics.
This recognition reflects a broader trend in college sports where academic performance is increasingly celebrated alongside athletic achievements. According to a recent NCAA report, student-athletes are more likely to graduate than non-athletes, with graduation rates rising steadily over the years.
