DOCO, a rural distribution startup, has raised ₹4.5 crore (around $540,000) in pre-seed funding. This investment reflects a strong interest from investors in tech solutions that target the vast market of semi-urban and rural India, often called ‘Bharat.’

The funding round was led by GVFL, a well-known venture capital firm, with support from Malpani Ventures and contributions from existing investor Kunwar Asheesh Saxena, the former co-founder and CTO of RedDoorz, along with other angel investors.

Founded in 2023 by Jitendra Yadav and Nishant Agarwal, DOCO aims to solve a significant issue in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector: the complex and inefficient supply chains in rural areas. Their approach, known as Rural Distribution-as-a-Service, utilizes a tech-driven platform that combines dark stores, local delivery partners, and an optimized supply chain. This system helps FMCG products reach rural retailers quickly and affordably.

In just a short time, DOCO has made impressive strides:

  • Current Reach: The startup operates 10 dark stores and serves over 5,000 retailers primarily in western Uttar Pradesh.
  • Brand Partnerships: DOCO collaborates with more than 15 well-known FMCG brands like Bikano, Jabsons, Yellow Diamond, and Kingfisher.

With the new funds, DOCO plans to:

  1. Expand Locations: Increase dark store numbers to 25.
  2. Widen Retailer Network: Reach 25,000 retailers in the next year.
  3. Enhance Technology: Strengthen their tech platform to improve supply chain efficiency and transparency.

Investors view DOCO as key to tapping into India’s next wave of consumer growth. Mihir Joshi, Managing Director of GVFL, states, “DOCO has created a tech-enabled, transparent model that tackles inefficient rural distribution. Their integration of grassroots entrepreneurship with digital infrastructure positions them well for the growing market.”

Modernizing rural distribution is essential for FMCG brands to expand quickly while empowering local entrepreneurs. According to a recent survey, the rural consumer market is expected to grow by 30% in the next five years, highlighting the importance of efficient distribution in these regions.
