Lawmakers Prioritize Education: Key Strategies for the Upcoming Session

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Lawmakers from North Alabama gathered at the Jackson Center to discuss what to expect in the upcoming legislative session.

Education took center stage during the event. Senator Arthur Orr noted that the state’s education budget is expected to grow by about 2%. However, he added that funds for education are becoming harder to manage.

Orr shared that they are considering a new method for distributing school funding. This student-based formula focuses on factors like poverty, language barriers, and special education needs, recognizing that these students require more resources to succeed.

Representative Anthony Daniels mentioned the introduction of a comprehensive gambling bill as a potential solution for boosting education funding without raising taxes. He highlighted that certain proposals could generate up to $1.3 billion, which could greatly enhance education in Alabama.

Daniels believes that this funding could support various initiatives, including scholarships for in-state students and better childcare options.

Senator Orr added that a gambling bill is likely coming up for discussion, reflecting the strong desire among Alabamians to have a say on the lottery.
