OSHKOSH (WLUK) – The FOX 11 Food Project: Northeast Wisconsin Gives Thanks is making a big impact this season. On its third day, volunteers collected an impressive 9,439 pounds of food. This year, the drive is supporting Father Carr’s Place 2B in Oshkosh, which also received $2,540 in cash donations.
This year’s collection has already surpassed last year’s total of 5,480 pounds. Jim Boehm, executive director of Father Carr’s Place 2B, expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity. “Oshkosh really came through today. Our mission is to feed the hungry, and today we are doing just that,” he stated, highlighting the spirit of giving in the community.
Last year, 88 turkeys were gathered. This year, the goal was 100, but the community surpassed expectations with a whopping 198 turkeys donated. “When we opened a trunk and saw all that food, everyone had smiles on their faces,” Boehm added. “It truly feels like the start of the season of giving.”
The food drive has already achieved significant totals. The first day in Ashwaubenon brought in 27,000 pounds of food and $5,925, while the second day in Menasha saw 14,405 pounds of food and $4,058 in cash donations. So far, the three-day total stands at 50,844 pounds of food and $12,523.
Experts in food insecurity highlight the importance of community-driven efforts like this food drive. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 10.5% of U.S. households faced food insecurity in 2021. Events like the FOX 11 project not only provide immediate support but also raise awareness about ongoing issues within communities.
If you’re interested in helping out, there are still two opportunities to donate. The food drive will be in Manitowoc on Thursday and Marinette on Friday.
These initiatives not only feed those in need but also strengthen community bonds. They remind us that when people come together, they can make a real difference. Want to learn more? Check out more about food insecurity from the USDA.
