New Faces and Familiar Favorites: ‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Cast Revealed with Exciting Production Start Date!

FX’s hit series Shōgun is set to start production for Season 2 in January, right in Vancouver. Fans can expect both familiar and new faces alongside Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis. Among the new cast members are Asami Kizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda. Returning actors include Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba and Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro.

When Season 2 rolls out, U.S. viewers will find new episodes on FX and streamable on Hulu. For those outside the U.S., Disney+ will carry the series. If you missed it, you can still catch Season 1 on Hulu.

The first season, based on James Clavell’s novel, followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Sanada) as he navigated political treachery during a civil war. A marooned European ship and its pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), became pivotal to Toranaga’s strategy.

Season 2 takes place ten years later, continuing the intertwining stories of its two main characters.

Excitingly, the writing team includes names like Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, with fresh directing talent like Anthony Byrne and Kate Herron.

Shōgun made waves last awards season, winning 18 out of 25 Emmy nominations. This is a record for the most wins in a single season. It also marked a historic moment with Sanada as the first Japanese actor to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Anna Sawai as the first actress of Asian descent to win in her category.

Experts say that the show’s success reflects a growing interest in stories that bridge cultures and histories. With the global streaming trends on the rise, more audiences are eager for diverse narratives. This could pave the way for similar adaptations in the future.
