A passenger bus tragically plunged into a ravine in southern Peru on Wednesday, resulting in at least 37 fatalities and 13 injuries. According to local authorities, the bus collided with a pickup truck before veering off the road and falling over 650 feet to the Ocoña River below.
The bus was traveling from Chala, a mining town, to Arequipa when the accident occurred. Walther Oporto, the health manager of the Arequipa region, shared details of the crash on local radio. In response, regional leaders expressed their condolences and offered prayers for the victims and a swift recovery for the injured.
Bus accidents are unfortunately common in Peru. A significant incident in 2018 led to a ban on passenger buses using a notorious stretch of highway known as “Devil’s Curve,” where over 50 people perished in a single accident. For instance, just last month, a bus overturned, resulting in 10 deaths, while another incident in July left at least 18 dead and dozens injured.
Recent data from the Death Information System highlights a grim reality: in 2024 alone, about 3,173 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Peru. Experts in road safety advocate for better training for drivers and improved infrastructure to reduce these tragedies.
