What’s the common thread between Arabic calligraphy, Sesame Street, and Chinese fortune sticks? They’re all part of this year’s International Education Week at Vanderbilt!
International Education Week (IEW) celebrates global education and cultural exchange. It started in 2000, thanks to a memorandum from President Bill Clinton. This week highlights the importance of studying abroad and welcoming international students in U.S. schools. Each November, colleges across the country host a variety of events to showcase the impact of international education on their campuses.
At Vanderbilt, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) organizes IEW. Every year, they invite proposals from various departments. This year, over 20 departments and student organizations are involved, planning more than a dozen events that reflect the diverse experiences of the Vanderbilt community.
On Friday, November 14, the week kicks off with “World in Focus.” International students from Peabody College will share poster presentations discussing education systems from around the globe. The following week is packed with events, starting with a panel called “What I Know Now That I Wish I Knew Then,” where students and faculty discuss their experiences adjusting to life at Vanderbilt.
If you’re curious about studying abroad, don’t miss “Study Abroad OverVU,” which covers the basics. Interested in Arabic? Join the Arabic Club for a night of practicing calligraphy. Discover Central Asia with “Traditions and Transformations,” an interactive session led by four students. You can also enjoy International Game Night, featuring board games from various cultures, or learn about the Chinese tradition of fortune sticks.

Recent surveys show a growing interest in international education, especially among younger students. A report from the Institute of International Education found that over 325,000 U.S. students studied abroad in 2019, a 6% increase from the previous year. These experiences broaden perspectives and foster understanding, something that IEW embodies.
