Many expected the domestic box office to struggle in 2024 due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild. Surprisingly, Hollywood bounced back well. By the end of the year, ticket sales were only down by 3.9% from 2023, totaling $8.56 billion. This made it the second-best year for box office earnings in five years.
Big movies released over the summer, like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” topped the box office. “Moana 2” broke records during Thanksgiving weekend, earning $225 million, contributing to a record $420 million in total box office sales for that holiday.
While some films, such as “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Madame Web,” didn’t perform as expected, 22 other films still raked in over $100 million each domestically. This shows Hollywood’s resilience, even in a post-strike environment.
Beyond the blockbusters, many smaller films gained attention for their powerful themes, storytelling, and visuals. Using data from Metacritic, Stacker ranked the top 25 movies of 2024 based on their Metascores. To make the list, films had to be released and reviewed in the U.S. by December 31, 2024.
From animated hits like “Flow” to serious contenders like “Nickel Boys” and “All We Imagine as Light,” 2024 showcased a remarkable variety of films that critics adored. Stay tuned as we delve into the best of the year!
