TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — While the government is back in business, many families in the Big Bend area are still facing tough times.
Families who depend on SNAP benefits won’t see immediate help. Local food banks report that the demand for assistance is already increasing. “We’ve received a record number of calls from worried community members,” says Monique Ellsworth, CEO of Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
Congress recently resolved a budget stalemate, but the relief will take time to reach those in need. Economic expert Dr. Randall Holcombe from Florida State University warns that although the shutdown is over, the uncertainty continues. “People who rely on government funding are left facing real challenges,” he explains.
These challenges include managing bills and stretching grocery budgets while waiting for their SNAP benefits to be processed. Ellsworth notes that many families are dipping into savings just to make ends meet.
As the holidays approach, the strain could worsen without the support many families rely on every year. In response, local organizations are rallying to assist. The annual Turkey Drive by ABC 27 and Second Harvest aims to collect 1,000 turkeys and raise $50,000 to support families until federal aid arrives.
This year’s drive is crucial. Many families may head into Thanksgiving feeling the extra weight of financial uncertainty. So far, social media reactions highlight community spirit, with people sharing their own stories of struggle and support.
Experts suggest that food insecurity has reached alarming levels. According to a recent survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 10.5% of households in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2021, reflecting growing challenges amid economic fluctuations.
In the Big Bend region, the need is palpable. Food banks are gearing up for an influx of families looking for help. “We are here for our neighbors,” Ellsworth stresses.
While the government might be open, for many, the path to recovery is just beginning. Community efforts and the drive for support show the resilience of those affected.
