Ruth Chepngetich, the incredible runner from Kenya, is set to compete in the 2025 London Marathon on April 27. Just last year, she amazed everyone by becoming the fastest woman to complete a marathon at the Chicago Marathon, finishing in a stunning time of 2:09:56. This achievement broke the previous world record of 2:11:53, established by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa.
Chepngetich has a powerful running style. She starts strong and keeps pushing through to the finish. She has triumphed at the Chicago Marathon three times (2021, 2022, and 2024) and was second in 2023. However, she still has a goal to achieve in London. Despite her impressive record, she has never won the London Marathon, finishing third in 2020 and ninth last year.
The 2025 race won’t be easy, as Chepngetich will face a fierce lineup. Among her competitors will be Sifan Hassan, the reigning Olympic champion, and Peres Jepchirchir, who recently set a new women’s-only marathon world record at the 2024 London Marathon, clocking 2:16:16.
Women’s-only world records are for races where only women compete. Since the London Marathon features separate races for elite men and women, Jepchirchir’s recent win qualifies her for that record. However, Chepngetich’s world record in Chicago doesn’t count for the women’s-only category because both men and women ran together.
Chepngetich is excited about the challenges ahead. “The London Marathon always gathers the best athletes. This year will be competitive,” she said. “With the strength in the group, I believe we can support each other, and maybe we can break the world record.”
Reflecting on her incredible achievement in Chicago, Chepngetich shared, “I didn’t know it was possible, but I realized dreams can come true. Hard work and belief in oneself are key.”
Spencer Barden, head of elite athletes at London Marathon Events, praised Chepngetich’s performance, stating, “Her world record redefined what’s possible in women’s marathon running. We’re thrilled to have her compete against Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and last year’s champion Peres Jepchirchir in what promises to be an exciting race.”
The complete list of elite runners for the 2025 London Marathon will be revealed soon. Fans are eagerly awaiting this thrilling showdown on the streets of London.
