Telangana’s Ambition to Lead in Aerospace and Defense
Telangana has set its sights on becoming India’s “Aero-Engine Capital” by 2030. Duddilla Sridhar Babu, the Minister for IT and Industries, shared this vision at a recent aerospace and defense summit in Hyderabad. The state aims to develop a robust aerospace and defense ecosystem by partnering with leading companies and universities.
Building a Defense Ecosystem
Minister Sridhar Babu noted that previous administrations laid the groundwork for Telangana’s growth as a defense hub. These foundational projects give the region a competitive edge in crafting a complete supply chain for defense manufacturing. With shifting global politics and disruptions in supply chains, many countries are looking for trustworthy partners. India’s defense production reached an impressive ₹1.5 lakh crore last year, with a 12% rise in defense exports, illustrating the growing global confidence in India’s capabilities.
Telangana’s goal is to integrate the aerospace and defense sector into its broader economic strategy, targeting a $3 trillion economy by 2047. The state is home to over 25 major aerospace and defense firms and 1,500 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are helping to elevate Telangana’s profile on the global stage.
Recent Growth and Future Investments
In the current fiscal year, Telangana’s aerospace exports were ₹15,900 crore. Remarkably, they surged to ₹30,742 crore within just the first nine months of the following fiscal year, showing an impressive growth trajectory.
Major investments are also flowing into the region. The Tata–Safran aero-engine plant in Adibatla is already operational, representing a significant ₹425 crore investment. Additionally, a new UAV unit by JSW Defence, costing ₹800 crore, will be launching soon, along with a ₹500 crore defense production unit from Premier Explosives.
Conclusion
As Telangana pushes toward becoming a significant player in the aerospace and defense industry, it demonstrates an understanding of the dynamic global landscape and a commitment to building a resilient local economy. With these developments, the state’s ambitions seem well within reach.
