LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – On Saturday, Governor Andy Beshear announced that Kentuckians eligible for SNAP benefits should see those funds loaded onto their cards by today. This news comes after a federal government shutdown left many without essential support, causing concern and frustration.
As conditions improve, the community has shown incredible compassion. One notable effort is LMPD’s first-ever “Cram the Cruiser” event. Typically, they host similar events, but the increased need prompted them to organize this one.
At six Kroger locations, LMPD cruisers parked outside, inviting shoppers to donate non-perishable food items and cleaning supplies. All collected items will go to Dare to Care Food Bank, targeting immediate community needs. Baby food was in high demand, inspiring Heather Canino to contribute. “I just know times are tough right now, and if I can help any child, that’s great,” she said. “Even an extra five dollars can make a difference.”
LMPD Sergeant Tony Sacra shared the department’s commitment to helping the community: “It’s great knowing that you’re feeding a family. At the end of the day, we want to take care of those who need us the most.” The department estimates over 1,200 pounds of food will be collected for Dare to Care.
Meanwhile, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was busy packing and distributing more than 100 Thanksgiving baskets for families in the Jefferson County Public Schools. These baskets are packed with traditional items like mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, along with additional groceries to provide more than just holiday meals.
Latisha Cahoon, the sorority’s president, noted, “When we started, we gave away maybe 35 baskets. Now it’s over 100. We’re blessing even more people.” Their giving extends beyond just Thanksgiving; they also provide weekend meals for 85 students at a local elementary school.
Efforts like these spotlight how community spirit thrives in tough times. According to recent surveys, about 1 in 7 Americans reported food insecurity—showing just how crucial these local support systems are. Furthermore, food banks across the U.S. have seen an uptick in demand, with many organizations urging community involvement to help meet these needs.
