COLUMBUS, Miss. – Keeping an eye on health is key for everyone, especially men. A local organization is stepping up to help men in the Columbus area stay well.
The Columbus Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. is hosting its 2nd annual men’s health fair, making it easier for men to check on their wellness. “We want to bring men in the community together to focus on their health,” said Gerod Ellis, the chapter’s vice president. “It’s often overlooked, and we want men to know that their health is important.”
This concern is backed by data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showing that one in four men in the U.S. faces death from cardiovascular issues like heart attacks. To combat this, the health fair offers free health checks, including blood pressure, blood sugar tests, and vision screenings.
Attendee Brenda Wilson expressed her gratitude, saying, “Men often avoid seeking healthcare. It’s great to see events like this. If you can’t make it today, reach out to the organizers for help.”
Lois O’Neal, who provides mental health services, emphasized the importance of community awareness. “We need to support individuals so they can thrive, not just survive. Together, we can create positive change.”
Research indicates that regular health check-ups can significantly increase life expectancy and quality of life. According to a study published in the *American Journal of Preventive Medicine*, men who engage in preventive health measures are 44% less likely to face serious health issues later in life.
Organizers plan to continue the health fair annually at the Southside Missionary Baptist Church, aiming to build a healthier community each year.
