New York Jets player Kris Boyd is in critical but stable condition after being shot in the abdomen early Sunday morning at a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the incident, which took place around 2 a.m. at Sei Less on West 38th Street.
According to the NYPD, a heated dispute preceded the shooting, which involved two gunshots fired by an unidentified shooter who then fled in a BMW X8 SUV. Another vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz Maybach, was also seen leaving the area. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation continues.
Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Initially signed by the Jets on a one-year, $1.6 million deal, he has yet to play this season due to a shoulder injury he sustained during preseason. He was a seventh-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 and has also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.
This shooting shines a light on ongoing safety concerns in urban areas, with recent crime statistics showing a rise in violent incidents in New York City. According to the NYPD, there was a 22% increase in shootings in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year.
Experts suggest that incidents like this can impact not just the individuals involved, but the communities as well. When athletes become victims of crime, it raises questions around safety and security in city nightlife.
User reactions on social media have been mixed, with many expressing concern for Boyd’s recovery and safety while others have criticized the growing violence in urban nightlife.
