DENVER — After the Chiefs’ narrow 22-19 loss to the Broncos, Patrick Mahomes took a moment alone before heading to the locker room. He later faced the media, where he took responsibility for the defeat, which dropped Kansas City to a 5-5 record.
“We have a lot of talent here,” Mahomes said, “but we need to be more consistent. It starts with me.” He highlighted that in some moments, he moves the ball well, but there are times he misses throws or misreads defensive alignments.
During the game, Mahomes struggled to find his rhythm against the Broncos’ defense. A notable example was on the opening drive, where he overthrew two deep passes to open receivers. “I need to make those throws,” he admitted, recognizing that missed opportunities can cost games.
The Chiefs aimed for victory after their bye week to stay competitive in the AFC West. However, their chances of winning the division fell to just 10%, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, which analyzed the remainder of the season using simulations. ESPN BET also noted the Chiefs’ odds were at their longest since 2015.
Going forward, Mahomes emphasized the importance of focusing on each week like a playoff game. “We have to find a way to win,” he said. The Chiefs’ next opponents, the Colts, are 8-2 and present a tough challenge.
Historically, the Chiefs face an uphill battle when starting a season 5-5. Statistics show that only 9% of teams that have started with such a record qualify for the playoffs. The last team to start the season this way and win the Super Bowl was the 2001 New England Patriots, led by rookie Tom Brady.
Mahomes also reflected on a critical error late in the game that hindered their chances. Instead of throwing the ball away while scrambling in the red zone, he attempted a pass that was intercepted. “I’ve got to play smarter,” he acknowledged.
This season has seen the Chiefs lose five games, all by just one score. Previously, they had a historic streak of 17 consecutive one-score victories.
Coach Andy Reid stressed the need to execute well in crucial moments. “You have to make plays when it matters,” he said.
In the closing minutes, Mahomes had a chance to lead a game-winning drive but ultimately couldn’t convert. “I wanted that chance,” he said. “It just didn’t go well.”
As the Chiefs look ahead, they know every game matters more than ever, and they must tighten their performance to keep playoff hopes alive.
