British artisan plant-based cheese brand JULIENNE BRUNO has a new owner. After running into financial trouble, it was acquired by Harvey & Brockless, part of The Compleat Food Group, which specializes in artisan foods.
Founded in 2020, JULIENNE BRUNO quickly gained traction, raising £5 million in 2022 and supplying various retailers, wholesalers, and restaurants across the UK. The brand even branched out internationally, reaching markets in Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland.
However, to grow and become profitable, JULIENNE BRUNO needed more investment. When that didn’t materialize, the company began looking for new ownership. Unfortunately, a viable solution couldn’t be found before Sam Birchall and Howard Smith from Interpath stepped in as joint administrators on November 11. They were able to sell key assets, including the brand itself, but all 14 employees were let go.
Tom Swiers, head of food and drink at Interpath, acknowledged the brand’s strong reputation. “JULIENNE BRUNO has been known for its innovative plant-based products and has built a loyal customer base both locally and abroad,” he noted. “This sale will help the brand continue and serve its customers better.”
The Compleat Food Group now adds JULIENNE BRUNO to its roster of plant-based brands, including Squeaky Bean, a meat alternative producer, and Palace Culture, which offers dairy-free cheeses.
This acquisition reflects a broader trend in the food industry. A recent report from Statista shows that the global plant-based food market is expected to reach $162 billion by 2030, indicating a strong consumer shift towards healthier and sustainable options. As more people turn to plant-based diets, brands like JULIENNE BRUNO become increasingly relevant, showcasing the evolution of food preferences.
In social media, reactions to the acquisition have been mixed. While some customers expressed sadness over the job losses, many are hopeful that under new ownership, JULIENNE BRUNO will innovate and expand further, continuing to deliver quality products.
This case illustrates both the challenges and opportunities in today’s evolving food landscape, where innovation and adaptability are crucial for success.
