Earth is buzzing with excitement as NASA prepares to reveal stunning images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. A live news conference is set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. EST. Scientists will share fresh images captured by various telescopes and spacecraft over the last month, offering a glimpse into this unique celestial visitor.
The timing of the announcement is crucial. The U.S. government shutdown from October 1 to November 12 delayed NASA’s ability to communicate with the public. During that time, 3I/ATLAS achieved significant milestones in its journey through our solar system.
On October 29, the comet made its closest approach to the sun, lighting up as its icy surface began to vaporize. Just a few weeks earlier, on October 3, it zipped past Mars, coming within 19 million miles. This distance might seem huge, but it’s the best view we’ll get for a while. The comet will only come about 170 million miles from Earth during its nearest pass on December 19.
Experts have been eagerly watching this comet. ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter managed to take its closest images on October 3. However, these images appear blurry because the spacecraft was designed to observe Mars, not fast-moving objects in deep space. Still, they confirmed that 3I/ATLAS has the characteristic cloud of ionized gas, known as a coma, typical of comets.
Data from Mars orbiter missions complemented observations from Earth-based telescopes, allowing researchers to pinpoint the comet’s trajectory more accurately. This collaborative effort highlights how global research can enhance our understanding of space.
