While Shedeur Sanders was making his NFL debut on Sunday, his home was targeted by burglars. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office reported that three suspects broke into the rookie quarterback’s house during the Cleveland Browns’ game against the Baltimore Ravens. They stole around $200,000 worth of items.
Surveillance footage captured the suspects, who wore masks and gloves, entering his home around 6:46 p.m. They spent about 12 minutes inside before leaving with several bags filled with items that belonged to Sanders. The footage revealed they entered through an unlocked door and returned to the woods around 6:58 p.m.
A representative for Sanders expressed hope to keep the incident low-key. After the break-in, a deputy spoke directly with Sanders at his home, which is approximately 30 miles southwest of Cleveland.
Sanders, 23, came into the league as a fifth-round draft pick from Colorado. He had mentioned to reporters that his signing bonus wasn’t substantial enough for immediate property investments.
Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case. High-profile athletes often find their homes targeted while they play. Notable past incidents include players like Luka Dončić, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce—all burglarized during games.
In the game, Sanders made his debut during the second half. The Browns were leading 16-10 when he took the field after QB Dillon Gabriel was sidelined with a concussion. Sanders completed 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards and threw an interception. “I don’t think I played good,” he admitted after the game. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski mentioned that Sanders might start in the upcoming Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders if Gabriel doesn’t clear concussion protocol.
In light of these incidents, experts urge athletes to consider security measures when purchasing homes. According to a 2022 survey by The Sports Security Association, 70% of athletes reported concerns about home security during their careers. Proper security systems can make homes less appealing targets for thieves.
