The DJI Osmo Action 6 is an intriguing new player in the action camera world. Unlike typical action cameras that are simple to operate, this model offers advanced features that appeal to those who really understand videography. One of its standout traits is the adjustable aperture, allowing users to control the level of background blur, or bokeh, when filming.
This variable aperture pushes aside more conventional models like GoPro and introduces a new level of creativity. The Osmo Action 6 comes with a new 1/1.1-inch square sensor, which should improve image quality. Interestingly, this design is similar to the new selfie camera of the iPhone 17, allowing for easy cropping for various formats.
At a recent tech event in Berlin, the Osmo Action 6 caught a lot of eyes. It looks similar to the previous model, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, but has several upgrades. For example, its aperture can now be adjusted from f/2.0 to f/4.0, which helps in low-light conditions. Users can shoot in SuperNight mode at 4K and 60 fps, enhancing nighttime footage quality.
The camera’s Auto mode adjusts settings based on the scene, which makes it easier for users who may be less experienced. Additionally, there’s a “Starburst” mode for capturing stunning light effects, adding a fun twist to nighttime photography.
Slow motion lovers will appreciate that the Osmo Action 6 supports up to 240 fps in 1080p resolution. While its 4K recording at 120 fps is impressive, it’s slightly lower than the GoPro Hero 13’s capabilities. However, it offers 13.5 stops of dynamic range, which can be a game-changer for capturing contrasting scenes.
What’s more, the Osmo Action 6 comes with 50GB of internal storage. It also supports microSD cards up to 1TB, making it practical for extended adventures. In line with recent trends, the camera is compatible with various lens accessories, like a macro lens for close-up shots, appealing to a wide range of users.
However, potential U.S. buyers might face a hurdle. DJI stated that the Osmo Action 6 won’t be available in the U.S. immediately due to ongoing concerns about national security risks related to its ties with China. This situation has impacted many of its products, including new drones and other devices. For example, DJI is under scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission, which might impose further sanctions if it decides to block new certifications.
This uncertainty around availability reflects broader trends in the tech industry, where geopolitical issues often affect market access. For consumers eager to get their hands on innovative gadgets, it’s a waiting game that may change as circumstances evolve.
