Unveiling Excellence: Midway University Celebrates the Opening of the James C. Bowling School of Business

Midway University Honors James C. Bowling

In a heartfelt ceremony, Midway University dedicated its School of Business to James C. Bowling, a man whose legacy has deeply influenced the school and its community.

Dr. John P. Marsden, the university’s president, emphasized the importance of the Bowling family’s contributions. “Today’s dedication is a tribute not only to James C. Bowling’s leadership but to his family’s unwavering support for Midway University,” he said. Their vision and commitment continue to propel the institution forward.

James C. Bowling joined the Midway Junior College Board of Trustees in 1962 and dedicated 35 years to guiding the university through significant changes. His leadership was crucial during pivotal moments in its history.

Outside of his role at the university, Bowling was a respected leader in the business world, serving as senior vice president at Philip Morris. He was known for his integrity and innovative approach, influencing many through mentorship and belief in education’s power to change lives. Bowling passed away in June 1997, but his influence endures.

His family has continued his legacy. Ann Jones Bowling, his wife, served for 26 years on the Board of Trustees and was named Trustee Emerita. Their daughter, Belinda Metzger, currently serves as the vice chair, while another daughter, Nancy Gramps, supports scholarships through her artwork.

“The James C. Bowling School of Business will remain a lasting reminder of his impact,” Marsden noted. It will inspire future students to learn and grow under a name synonymous with leadership and opportunity.

In today’s education landscape, maintaining strong leadership and community ties is vital. According to the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), institutions with a robust connection to their alumni and community experience higher levels of support and engagement. This reflects how the Bowling family’s sustained engagement has enriched Midway University.

Every dedication, like the Bowling School of Business, serves as a reminder of how individuals can leave an indelible mark on their communities through service and commitment.
