Environmentalists in Satkhira recently marched through the streets, calling for climate justice and the establishment of a dedicated institution to tackle climate issues in Bangladesh’s coastal regions. This event, organized by the Green Coalition, BARCIK, and the Education, Culture and Diversity Protection Team, began at Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park.
During the rally that followed, speakers underscored the severe impacts of climate change. They highlighted the rising salinity in the soil, the threats posed by cyclones and tidal surges, and the ongoing scarcity of freshwater in coastal districts. Despite being heavily affected by climate change, these regions still lack a specialized body focused on their development and protection.
Experts emphasize that forming a Coastal Development Board is crucial for the sustainable management of these vulnerable areas. This board could facilitate planned development and aid communities facing adverse effects.
Participants also voiced their demands for fair compensation for those affected by climate impacts and urged increased international funding for climate initiatives. They called for measures to combat salinity, conserve freshwater, and support climate-resilient agriculture. Furthermore, the need for improved safety and livelihood protection for fishing communities was a key point of discussion.
Notably, studies show that coastal areas worldwide are facing similar challenges. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), rising sea levels and climate change are threatening millions of lives and livelihoods globally, making local action increasingly urgent.
The event was led by Azad Hossain Belal of the Satkhira District Citizens’ Committee, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in climate planning. The movement seeks to ensure that local voices, especially those of youth, women, and marginalized groups, are included in decision-making processes.
As climate change intensifies, it’s clear that collaborative efforts will be essential in protecting vulnerable coastal communities across the globe.
