Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space company, has just announced plans for a more powerful rocket called New Glenn 9×4. This new variant will feature nine engines on the first stage and four on the second, enhancing its payload capacity. This upgrade comes right after the second mission of the original New Glenn rocket, which stands at 29 stories tall and has a reusable first stage.
The company aims to compete with SpaceX’s lineup, especially as U.S. rivals like Rocket Lab and United Launch Alliance are also working on larger rockets. Blue Origin has invested billions and spent nearly a decade developing the New Glenn project. The original New Glenn’s design will still be available alongside its new counterpart, giving customers more options for various missions.
Dave Limp, the CEO of Blue Origin, shared a digital rendering of the super-heavy rocket. It looks notably taller than the Saturn V rocket, which was crucial in the U.S. Apollo program that sent humans to the moon.
While Blue Origin has not announced specific launch dates for the 9×4, they indicated that the improvements will allow for quicker development, thanks to lessons learned from earlier designs.
Interestingly, recent trends on social media show that interest in space exploration is booming. A 2022 survey revealed that nearly 70% of Americans support increased funding for space missions, reflecting a growing fascination with the cosmos. This excitement around space travel is echoed in initiatives like NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon and eventually reach Mars.
Overall, the launch of New Glenn 9×4 reflects a significant step forward in commercial space travel. As private companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX push boundaries, the future of space exploration looks brighter than ever.
