Braves president Alex Anthopoulos spoke to reporters after the team traded for Mauricio Dubón from the Astros in exchange for Nick Allen. Anthopoulos sees Dubón as a potential starting shortstop but is open to using him in a utility role if the team finds an upgrade.
“Our data shows he performs well at shortstop,” said Anthopoulos. “He’s also capable at second, third, and even center field. We value his speed and contact skills.” He noted that Dubón’s exact role will depend on team moves this winter and Spring Training.
The Braves are unlikely to pursue Bo Bichette, as their focus has shifted to Ha-Seong Kim, who recently opted out of his $16 million contract. Anthopoulos indicated interest in Kim, but it’s uncertain if the Braves will meet his expected salary demands for a multi-year deal.
Right now, there are few teams looking to trade a starting shortstop. Washington might consider moving CJ Abrams, but they may ask for a lot and hesitate to trade within the division. The White Sox and Rockies are also working with promising young shortstops, Colson Montgomery and Ezequiel Tovar, respectively.
There’s speculation the Rangers may trade superstar Corey Seager due to payroll issues, but given his significant contract of $31 million per year for six more seasons, it would be unexpected. Atlanta is on Seager’s no-trade list, complicating any potential deal.
Dubón has played 81 games at shortstop in the majors, with a career-high of over 206 innings last season. Statistically, he’s average defensively at short, but some metrics show he’s better than that. A two-time Gold Glove winner in utility roles, he excels defensively at second base and outfield. While he may not match Allen’s defensive skills, his overall value as a player is higher.
The Braves face a crucial decision: Is Dubón worth upgrading to Kim, and at what cost? Investing heavily in a shortstop could limit funds for other needs, such as a mid-rotation starter.
The starting rotation carries risks. Chris Sale and Spencer Strider lead a group that lacks depth. Grant Holmes, who had a 3.99 ERA before suffering a UCL injury, is a wild card. He’s opted for rehab over surgery, and Anthopoulos is optimistic about his recovery, but his status is uncertain until Spring Training.
