BANGKOK (AP) — Fátima Bosch Fernández from Mexico won the title of Miss Universe 2025 in a dramatic event held in Bangkok. Her victory was notable, especially after facing bullying from one of the hosts.
In the final results, 29-year-old Praveenar Singh from Thailand was the first runner-up, and 25-year-old Stephany Adriana Abasali Nasser from Venezuela came in third. The top five rounded out with Ahtisa Manalo from the Philippines and Olivia Yacé from Ivory Coast.
The pageant was filled with tension, particularly after a harsh scolding directed at Bosch during the sashing ceremony. Nawat Itsaragrisil, the Thai national director, criticized her for not following guidelines. When she defended herself, he threatened to call security, causing Bosch to walk out, supported by several contestants, including Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark.
Bosch later stated, “What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb. If it takes away your dignity, you need to go.” This moment resonated widely, prompting a strong response from Raúl Rocha Cantú, the president of the Miss Universe Organization, who labeled the incident as “public aggression.”
Even Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, praised Bosch for her courage. She emphasized the importance of women raising their voices, reflecting a cultural shift toward empowerment. “We women look more beautiful when we raise our voice,” she said, recalling past messages urging women to stay silent.
In a later statement, Nawat expressed his regret but also displayed a defiant attitude, suggesting that the matter was over and urging contestants to move on.
Bosch’s background is impressive. She studied fashion in both Mexico and Italy, focusing on sustainable design and environmental awareness. She has volunteered for various causes, including helping sick children and advocating for mental health.
This year’s event also dealt with controversies, such as two judges quitting and allegations of rigging, which were denied. Thai police also looked into promotional activities that may have been linked to illegal online gambling, adding to the drama surrounding the competition.
Controversies have been a recurring theme in pageants. For instance, the 2021 Miss Universe drew criticism for being held in Israel amidst political tensions. Such issues highlight the complexities of beauty pageants and their societal impact.
