Averett University is making significant changes to its tuition structure starting in fall 2026. This move aims to make the cost of college clearer for new students. It will also introduce automatic admission for eligible students at the university located in Danville, Virginia.
In an announcement, Averett revealed that it plans to simplify costs by removing confusing scholarships and varying discounts. The new tuition will be around $24,750 per year, a sharp decline from the current tuition of $39,520. After including fees and housing, the total annual cost will be approximately $39,960, down from over $53,400.
The university’s financial aid page mentions that students currently benefit from an average scholarship package that lowers costs by nearly 40% over four years.
Matthew Mann, the university’s Vice President for Enrollment, stated, “This new plan lets us serve students better in their college search by simplifying the process.” This comes as Averett has faced financial challenges, particularly following a spring 2024 discovery of a significant depletion in its endowment funds.
The undergraduate enrollment has dropped from 1,230 in fall 2024 to about 1,050 this fall, marking the first decline after previous growth. Under the new direct admission program, high school seniors who have a GPA of at least 2.5 and have completed three high school math courses will be automatically accepted.
This move aligns with a broader trend in higher education. Many universities, like Emory & Henry University, have recently reduced their published tuition to better match what students usually pay after financial aid. This trend is becoming increasingly common as colleges adapt to a shrinking pool of college-age students and changing perceptions of a college degree’s value.
