Iran at COP30: Why Funding is Essential for Effective Climate Action

Sediqeh Torabi from Iran’s Department of Environment spoke at the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. She stressed that developing countries, like Iran, need reliable financing to tackle climate change. With severe droughts and water shortages, Iran is facing real challenges.

Torabi explained that without the right financial support and technology, it’s tough for Iran to make ambitious emissions reduction targets. She highlighted that adaptation—improving early warning systems and protecting vital water resources—is crucial for the country and similar nations.

She also warned that punitive measures against developing countries make it harder for them to access funds and technology needed for climate action. These obstacles must be addressed to create effective climate strategies.

COP30 is a significant event, gathering leaders and experts to discuss how to limit global warming to 1.5°C and evaluate progress on past financial commitments.

On the sidelines of the conference, Shina Ansari, head of the DOE, met with international representatives, including Simon Stiell, the UN climate chief. Ansari discussed Iran’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gases amid sanctions that limit access to funds and technologies. She mentioned initiatives like cutting flaring at oil fields and implementing a climate change management plan.

Stiell praised Iran’s actions and promised to amplify Iran’s voice in global discussions. Meanwhile, Ansari connected with Anacláudia Rossbach, director of UN-Habitat, emphasizing the need for strategic urban planning to combat climate impacts and enhance city resilience.

They agreed that improving urban management is essential for better quality of life in cities facing climate challenges. Ansari also met Croatian Environment Minister Marija Vuckovic, discussing collaboration on environmental issues. Vuckovic invited Ansari for an official visit to Croatia to strengthen ties.

Overall, COP30 highlights the urgent need for united global efforts in climate action. As nations come together to share resources and knowledge, building partnerships becomes essential for effective environmental strategies.
