Cars lined up before the SPCA Serving Erie County opened for its “Pack the Pet Food Pantry” event, highlighting strong community support. Many people are eager to help families keep their pets during tough times.
Volunteer Cory Vandeusen shared, “Some people have to choose between feeding their pets or their children. They always choose their kids.” The pantry offers free food, helping families avoid that difficult choice.
Donors flocked in with bags of food and supplies, driven by the understanding of how quickly a family can face hardships. For many, this act of generosity is a way to “pay it forward,” especially as holiday expenses rise.
The need for help is growing. This year, the SPCA’s Pet Food Pantry saw demand nearly triple, skyrocketing from about 20,000 meals a month to over 60,000. This surge reflects serious economic pressures many are facing.
Preventing pet surrender is crucial to the SPCA’s mission. Along with food assistance, they provide supplies, vaccinations, and veterinary care to help families keep their pets at home instead of in shelters.
Gina Lattuca, the SPCA’s Chief Communications Officer, encouraged those struggling to reach out. She said, “If you can’t afford to keep your pet but don’t want to surrender them, we’re here to help.”
In recent surveys, over 60% of pet owners reported worrying about their ability to feed their pets, especially during economic downturns. This indicates a growing need for community resources like the SPCA pantry.
