New Delhi/Johannesburg: During his recent trip to Johannesburg for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with leaders from the Indian community in South Africa.
In a post on X, he noted, “I interacted with members of the Indian community in South Africa. They shared their thoughts on various issues and appreciated India’s progress in multiple areas. I encouraged them to strengthen people-to-people connections and promote Indian culture, including Yoga and Ayurveda.”
This meeting aimed to strengthen cultural ties and deepen bonds between India and its diaspora in South Africa. Community leaders expressed their admiration for Modi’s vision. Swami Acharya remarked, “It was an inspiring meeting, and PM Modi continues to motivate us.” Similarly, Swami Abhedananda from the Chinmaya Mission found the discussion rewarding, stating, “It was great to talk openly and enjoy the interaction.”
A community leader pointed out key discussion topics: “Modi ji emphasized three main points. First, he asked about our efforts in promoting vernacular languages. Second, he stressed the importance of boosting tourism in India, noting that we can make a significant impact with our large population here. Finally, he expressed a wish for those with generations of family in India to help promote our culture.”
In a memorable moment, Modi received a Kalash from the Chinmaya Mission, filled with Shree Anna, or millets, from both India and South Africa. This will be placed in the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban.
Additionally, he met with winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz, which encourages members of the diaspora to learn about India’s rich history and culture, strengthening their connection to their homeland.
Modi’s interactions in Johannesburg highlighted India’s commitment to nurturing the cultural and emotional ties with the Indian community in South Africa. This engagement sets the stage for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit on November 22-23, where Modi will also conduct bilateral meetings with various world leaders.
According to a study by the Pew Research Center, the Indian diaspora is one of the largest in the world, with over 3 million people living in South Africa alone. Such interactions help enhance relationships and promote cultural exchanges.
As the world evolves, these discussions remain crucial for strengthening ties between India and its global communities. By fostering dialogue, the prime minister continues to inspire a sense of unity and shared heritage among Indians abroad.
