In a recent speech at Stamford University’s Convocation 2025, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, emphasized that protecting our environment and tackling climate change are crucial for Bangladesh’s future. She urged everyone to take action now to ensure that future generations inherit a healthy planet.
Hasan laid out the current challenges, such as air pollution, deforestation, and river contamination. While these issues can’t be fixed overnight, she believes that with ongoing effort, we can make a difference. Recently, river restoration projects have begun, alongside important legal reforms aimed at environmental protection.
According to recent research, Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. A 2023 study found that over 28 million people could be displaced by rising sea levels in the next few decades. This highlights the urgent need for a collective response.
Hasan also stressed the importance of kindness, not just among people but towards animals and nature as well. She said, “Compassion is inherent in our faith, yet we often fail to show it.” A truly humane society must care for all living things.
She called on families, educational institutions, and communities to play active roles in fostering a better future. “We need positive change within ourselves,” she noted, encouraging citizens to be responsible and proactive.
Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, who presided over the event, reminded graduates of their potential impact. He urged them to work diligently and think beyond themselves. “Your contributions can lead to significant societal changes,” he said.
In total, 1,407 graduates received their degrees, including ten who earned the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for their outstanding academic achievements. This year’s commencement sent a hopeful message: the future lies in the hands of the youth, and their commitment could shape not just Bangladesh, but the world.
