Kansas City firefighters are taking a step beyond their usual duties. This Saturday, they’re hosting a special food drive in two Northland parking lots to support families during the holidays.
The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) is eager to lend a helping hand as local food banks struggle to meet rising demand. “The community supports us, so we wanted to give back,” Michael Hopkins from KCFD shared.
This is the first food drive organized by the department. They felt inspired after noticing food pantries in the area are stretched thin. “The holidays should be a joyful time for everyone,” said Hopkins. “No one should worry about having enough food.”
Firefighters will be at Hy-Vee on I-29 and NW 64th Street and at the Sinclair gas station off Barry Road from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to collect donations. Hy-Vee store director Marty Streit expressed pride in the community’s willingness to help. “Kansas City is the best community in America. Our customers are always ready to support,” he said.
Aside from collecting food, the firefighters will also share essential holiday safety tips. During this season, kitchen fires often increase due to extra cooking. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S., contributing to nearly half of all reported incidents.
In 2021 alone, the U.S. saw 176,000 home cooking fires, highlighting the importance of safety. By providing tips and engaging with the community, the KCFD aims to ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday season.
This initiative reflects a growing trend among emergency services to engage with their communities beyond their primary roles. As seen in other cities, similar events have brought people together, fostering a sense of unity and support.
