The City of Casey is on the lookout for passionate young people, ages 15 to 25, to join their 2026 Youth Climate Action Committee (YCAC). This group aims to bring together local youth to engage in meaningful discussions about protecting our environment and tackling climate change.
One inspiring member is Misha Hassan, a VCE student in Casey and part of the 2025 YCAC. She joined to “contribute meaningfully to positive environmental change.” Misha discovered the committee at a youth summit and was drawn to its vision that matched her own environmental values.
Over the past year, Misha has taken on roles from spokesperson to meeting with the Mayor. “The last year has been incredibly rewarding,” she shares. “I’ve learned a lot and made connections with other young people who care about the environment. These relationships have deepened my commitment to protecting our natural habitats.”
The YCAC holds two meetings each month for brainstorming and planning. Currently, the group is organizing a documentary screening to highlight the dangers of non-recyclable goods on wildlife. They also host information sessions encouraging different community members to adopt eco-friendly habits.
Reflecting on past events, Misha noted the success of the “Inspire Leadership 2025” event aimed at helping Grade 6 students make sustainable lunch choices. The feedback received reaffirmed their impact, motivating the committee to develop more initiatives.
Importantly, the YCAC isn’t just focused on young people; it drives change within local governance as well. Recently, YCAC leaders met with Casey’s council members to advocate for sustainability initiatives. “We highlighted the urgency of climate change and encouraged them to support more sustainable projects in our community,” Misha explained.
During the June 2025 “Innovate Casey” event, Misha saw firsthand the council’s willingness to embrace innovative ideas that benefit both the environment and the community. “These discussions foster a sense of community spirit, not just education,” she added.
Misha’s journey over the year has given her insights into various sustainability issues, from recycling practices to the global impacts of climate change. “Every small action matters, and I’ve realized that doing my part leads to meaningful change,” she said.
Misha looks forward to carrying these values into her future climate advocacy work. “Being part of this inspiring group has taught me that every project and initiative contributes to a sustainable future for Casey.”
