New Delhi: The Indian Navy is set to launch the Mahe, the first of its kind in the new Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Monday. This event will be hosted by Vice-Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and attended by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi.
The Mahe marks a significant step in India’s naval capabilities, featuring over 80% indigenous content. This highlights India’s growing skills in designing, building, and integrating warships. The ship, known as a “Silent Hunter,” will be crucial for patrolling the Western Seaboard and protecting India’s maritime interests.
Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi, the Mahe aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or Self-Reliant India initiative, showcasing advancements in naval ship design and construction. Compact yet powerful, it combines agility, precision, and endurance—key traits for dominating coastal areas.
The ship is named after the historic town of Mahe on the Malabar Coast. Its crest features the ‘Urumi,’ a flexible sword from Kalaripayattu, symbolizing agility and lethal grace, drawing from Kerala’s rich martial tradition. This cultural link reinforces the ship’s purpose, which includes hunting submarines and securing vital maritime routes.
In addition to this launch, the Indian Navy is gearing up for Navy Day 2025 on December 3. The event will take place at Shangumugham beach in Thiruvananthapuram and promises to showcase the Navy’s operational capabilities. Historically, these demonstrations have occurred in various locations, including Puri and Sindhudurg, and aim to highlight the growing power of the Navy away from traditional bases.
As India continues to enhance its maritime strength, the introduction of the Mahe represents not just a technological advancement but also a stride towards greater self-sufficiency in defense capabilities.
