Revolutionizing Refrigeration: Environment Ministry Unveils National Strategy for Sustainable Cooling Solutions

On Monday, Jordan took a significant step towards a greener future by launching the National Strategy and Plan for Sustainable Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. This initiative, developed by the Ministry of Environment alongside the Royal Scientific Society and supported by the CoolUp Project, aims to provide efficient and climate-friendly cooling solutions.

The plan positions Jordan as a leader in sustainable cooling within the region, showcasing the country’s commitment to environmental responsibility and the Sustainable Development Goals. Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman emphasized that the strategy is a landmark achievement, aligning with Jordan’s goals under the Paris Agreement and the Kigali Amendment, which focus on reducing emissions and improving efficiency.

Suleiman noted that this plan is the result of collaboration among various sectors, including public and private entities and civil organizations. Their contributions helped shape a comprehensive approach that balances environmental stewardship with energy efficiency and enhances the quality of life for all citizens.

Rafat Assi, Vice President of the Royal Scientific Society, pointed out that the strategy reflects five years of joint efforts through the CoolUp Project. It provides a clear pathway for adopting efficient and sustainable cooling systems. Also, it encourages the use of natural refrigerants that are less harmful to the environment. This initiative dovetails with Jordan’s vision for economic modernization and its broader energy goals.

UNDP Resident Representative Randa Abu Hassan praised the project for offering a model for regional energy efficiency. With growing demand for cooling systems, she highlighted the need for safe alternatives that align with Jordan’s Nationally Determined Contributions.

According to a recent survey by the International Energy Agency, demand for cooling is rising, with predictions indicating a tripling of air conditioning units worldwide by 2050. This underscores the importance of Jordan’s timely initiative as the world grapples with climate change.

The successful implementation of this plan will require continuous collaboration among all stakeholders. Ongoing technical support will be essential to meet both environmental targets and improve community welfare.

This initiative not only seeks to enhance the technological landscape of cooling systems in Jordan but also hopes to inspire other nations in the region to adopt similar environmentally friendly practices. As climate pressures grow, Jordan is charting a proactive course towards sustainability, setting an example for others to follow.
