Join the Movement: Council President Teams Up with Environmental Groups to End Fireworks for a Greener Future

San Diego’s new city council president, Joe LaCava, is pushing to change SeaWorld’s use of fireworks. He believes these shows, which happen about 150 nights a year over Mission Bay, are too disruptive for nearby residents and the environment.

“The fireworks must come to an end,” LaCava stated. He noted the number of complaints his office has received as evidence of the problem. LaCava is eager to work with city departments and SeaWorld to find ways to reduce the firework displays while still enjoying celebrations.

For years, many, including environmental advocates and pet owners, have called for SeaWorld to limit or eliminate its fireworks. They argue that fireworks can harm sensitive wildlife and trauma survivors, like veterans with PTSD.

Some suggest that SeaWorld should consider switching to drone light shows instead, similar to what was recently done in Ocean Beach on July 4, 2023. While traditional fireworks can cost between $10,000 and $20,000 per show, drone light shows are still emerging as a new form of entertainment, costing around $100,000.

SeaWorld defends its fireworks shows, saying they are closely regulated by various governmental bodies, including the City of San Diego and environmental agencies. “We continually explore new ways to enhance our entertainment and educational experiences,” said Tracy Spahr, a spokesperson for SeaWorld.

Sam Bruggema, a producer at Pyro Spectaculars, disagrees with claims that short fireworks displays significantly hurt the environment. He believes that there’s no valid proof of major harm caused by occasional shows. He also feels that drone shows can’t replace the emotional experience of fireworks. “There are already places combining both,” he said, hinting at a future where both can coexist in entertainment.

Recently, the Mission Bay Parks Committee voted for SeaWorld to rethink its fireworks displays due to their effects on local wildlife. Conservation experts support this move. Andrew Meyer from the San Diego Bird Alliance emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife from disturbances like fireworks.

The San Diego Humane Society also backs this perspective. “Fireworks can frighten animals and disrupt wildlife,” said Nina Thompson, highlighting how drone shows could be a safer alternative. Drones are quieter and pose fewer risks, such as injuries from noise or fire.

As people increasingly seek safer and quieter celebrations, the combination of fireworks and drones is gaining traction. This hybrid approach uses drones with lights or pyrotechnics to create captivating displays while still maintaining some traditional fireworks effects. Drones can enhance shows while minimizing noise, making them a fantastic option for future celebrations.
