Evacuation Due to Fire at Wang Fuk Court Estate
A large fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po, prompting the evacuation of many residents. This estate has eight blocks, all undergoing major repairs, and seven were affected by the blaze.
District Councillor Mui Siu-fung reported that flames were visible through the windows of the block where the fire started. Thankfully, firefighters quickly extinguished a smaller fire in another block before it could spread.
Rescue efforts were complicated by the damage. Firefighters couldn’t safely enter the buildings right away. By around 15:00 local time, most residents had managed to evacuate, with Mui estimating that about 95% had left. Nearby public housing blocks were also evacuated.
At the Kwong Fuk Shopping Centre, an evacuation point, more than a thousand residents took shelter. The Home Affairs Department responded by opening several community centers and schools to serve as temporary shelters for those displaced.
