On Wednesday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched a 152-kilometre foot march from Karamsad to Kevadia. This event, called Rashtriya Ekta Yatra, honors Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birthday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a message, saying this journey will motivate people to align their dreams with the nation’s goal of becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The Yatra, organized by the state government, aims to foster national unity. It will end on December 5 at Ekta Nagar, near the Statue of Unity. Modi highlighted that Constitution Day, which is also on November 26, is about both rights and responsibilities. He noted, “This day reminds us that freedom is as much about performing duties as it is about living in unity.”
Historically, padyatras, or foot marches, have played an essential role in uniting people during India’s freedom struggle. They helped build camaraderie and shared purpose. PM Modi remarked that the footsteps of those marching together instilled pride and unity.
He also pointed out that today’s initiatives—like Digital India and Fit India—show how public participation can strengthen national unity. These programs reflect a collective spirit that contributes to the nation’s progress.
The launch event saw participation from various leaders, including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Union Minister Annapurna Devi.
Interestingly, surveys show that community activities like this one resonate strongly with younger generations, who crave a sense of belonging and shared purpose. According to a recent report, 73% of young people believe collective activities enhance social trust and cohesion.
As the Yatra progresses, it will stop at villages along the way, including Navli in Anand, bringing together communities for shared experiences and celebrations, such as the launch of the ‘Sardar Song’.
