A new program on Molokai celebrates the spirit of sharing food. The Barter and Trade event encourages residents to bring extra food from their gardens to swap with neighbors.

Organizer Mercy Ritte says the event connects people. It promotes generosity and helps build self-sufficiency. “We want to encourage local eating and depend less on imported goods,” she shared.

The theme “Ko Koa Uka, Ko Koa Kai” captures this idea, as those from the mountains share crops while those from the sea share fish.

This event isn’t a strict barter system; it’s more about sharing freely. “If you don’t have anything to give, just take what you need,” Ritte encourages.

Ritte got the idea for the event because food prices have risen sharply. “There’s a clear need to share food. It gets expensive, yet many have extra in their yards. We can all contribute something,” she said.

Starting in January, the event will happen every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. outside the Molokai Public Library. At the first event on January 8, around 40 locals exchanged their excess food.

One participant, Paul Hanley, brought herbs and avocados and left with spices and spinach. He loves the idea of neighbors helping each other with fresh produce. “What do you do with 100 ulus?” he joked.

The Barter and Trade event is a great way for the community to connect and support each other with the abundance of local food.
