Putin noted that the U.S. acknowledges some of Russia’s positions, but key issues still require direct talks. He reiterated his unsparing view that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “illegitimate,” which he claims complicates any binding agreement with Ukraine.
During a press conference in Kyrgyzstan, Putin declared that Russia would cease its military actions only if Ukrainian forces withdrew from certain territories. “If Ukrainian troops leave the territories they occupy, then we will stop fighting,” he stated. If they do not comply, he asserted that Russia would continue its military objectives.
The idea that Ukraine’s leadership is “illegitimate” reinforces Putin’s stance that any future resolution would need broader international acknowledgment.
Putin also confirmed that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit Russia soon, dismissing claims of bias during peace discussions as “nonsense.” Witkoff has faced backlash, especially after leaked information suggested he advised a Kremlin official on dealing with Trump.
